![]() You can see all the surrounding peaks and well-known landmarks. But it’s a short incline and the view is so worth it.Īt the summit, the elevation is 8,100 feet, which makes it the second highest point in Yosemite Valley! The first is Half Dome at 8,839 feet, if you’re wondering. Climbing the dome will get your heart pumping, and there’s no real trail, it’s really just a hike up the rocks. It’s a relatively level trail, which makes for an easy warm up, which is good since we needed to get used to the elevation difference. This is a 1.1-mile long trail to the base of the dome. We started the day by taking the fork to the right for Sentinel Dome. There are a couple food storage lockers here as well. The parking lot can get really full, but there’s plenty of dirt parking alongside the road. It’s a clearly marked paved parking lot that says Taft Point/Sentinel Dome. Keep in mind this road is only open from May-November. You’ll find the trailhead for both of these points about 2 miles before the end of Glacier Point Road. I think it’s so special to me because I’ve visited it so many times (about once a year ever since I was little) that it has nostalgic value. It’s my favorite National Park that I’ve been to, and I’ve been to many. In my book, there’s no place quite like Yosemite. ![]() From here, head up the gentle granite slope to the top (wear good hiking shoes), where you’ll have views of the entire park. This past weekend I explored a new hike in Yosemite National Park! I hiked to two beautiful lookout spots off of Glacier Road: Sentinel Dome and Taft Point. Skirt the base to an old service road, which leads to the dome’s northeast shoulder. After 20 minutes, it heads northwest across open granite slabs to the dome’s base. From the roadside parking lot, take the trail’s gently rising right fork. Park in the Sentinel Dome/Taft Point lot on the north side of Glacier Point Rd, about 13 miles from Chinquapin. You can combine a trip up Sentinel Dome with a walk to Taft Point and the Fissures, an equidistant hike from the same trailhead, or combine the two to form a loop via the solitary Pohono Trail. A visit at sunrise or sunset or during a full moon is spectacular. For those unable to visit Half Dome’s summit, Sentinel offers an equally outstanding 360-degree perspective of Yosemite’s wonders, and the 2.2-mile round-trip hike only takes about an hour. The hike to Sentinel’s summit (8122ft) is the shortest and easiest trail up one of Yosemite’s granite domes.
